Honduras

Colourful, welcoming and full of adventure, Honduras offers the chance to immerse yourself in a Spanish-speaking community while discovering a part of Central America that often sits beyond the usual tourist trail.

From lush mountains and vibrant towns to Caribbean beaches and incredible marine life, Honduras is a country of spectacular contrasts. It also has a rich cultural history, shaped by Indigenous cultures including the Lenca and Maya alongside many other influences.

As a Project Trust Volunteer, you’ll experience much more than the highlights. Whether living independently or with a host family, you’ll become part of everyday community life, develop your Spanish and build relationships that make Honduras feel like home.

Placement Types

Immersive Placement

Spend 10–12 months living and volunteering in Honduras, giving yourself the time to truly become part of your host community.
As your Spanish develops, so will your confidence and independence. You’ll build strong relationships with your pupils, colleagues and neighbours while experiencing everyday Honduran life from the inside.

Focused Placement

Spend 6–8 months teaching and living in Honduras. You’ll have time to settle into your school and community, develop your Spanish and build meaningful relationships while experiencing life in a completely different culture.

Discovery Placement

Spend 3–4 months living and volunteering in Honduras, immersing yourself in a Spanish-speaking community while supporting your local school.
You’ll develop your Spanish through everyday life, build relationships with your pupils and community, and grow in confidence as you adapt to somewhere completely new. A shorter placement packed with culture, connection and adventure.

What can you do?

TESOL – Teaching English

Help pupils develop their English through engaging lessons and activities. You’ll work with students across different ages and abilities, building their confidence while developing your own teaching and communication skills.

Teaching

Support pupils across a range of subjects in bilingual or public schools. Depending on your placement and strengths, you could teach subjects such as Maths, Science and English, while getting involved in wider school life.

What does life as a Volunteer look like?

FOOD

Food is a brilliant way to experience Honduran culture. Depending on your placement, you could be cooking independently or sharing meals with your host family.
Look out for local favourites such as baleadas – flour tortillas filled with beans and other toppings – and plato típico, usually combining ingredients such as rice, beans, plantain, salad and meat.
From shopping locally to sharing meals with the people around you, food will quickly become part of your everyday Honduran experience.

Living

Depending on your placement, you could live independently with your Volunteer partner or with a local host family.
Both give you the chance to become part of everyday community life, build relationships and develop your independence – while host family life is also a brilliant opportunity to practise your Spanish.

TRAVEL

Honduras is packed with places to explore. Dive or snorkel around the Bay Islands and Mesoamerican Reef, discover the Maya ruins of Copán, or head into the mountains, forests and national parks.
With Caribbean beaches, colourful towns and plenty of places away from the usual tourist trail, there’s lots to discover during your time off.
