Alorkpem Community School
Alorkpem Community School is a government school situated within the island community of Alorkpem in Ghana. Established with the support of the local community in 1961, the school works alongside Akoma Hearts of Ghana to provide learning opportunities for local children.
Your Project
As a Volunteer, you’ll work alongside local teachers to support pupils in the classroom and help develop creative and engaging ways for children to learn. You’ll primarily work with pupils in Grades 4–6, teaching subjects including English, Maths, Creative Arts, Science and basic computer skills, as well as supporting other areas where needed.
There is plenty of opportunity to bring your own ideas and creativity to the role. You could develop educational games and activities, use media such as animated films to support English learning, or introduce interactive ways of teaching through play. You may also help pupils explore environmental topics, such as plastic pollution and caring for their local environment.
Outside of lessons, you’ll have the opportunity to organise games and activities during break times and become involved in the wider life of the school. Enthusiasm, creativity and a willingness to bring new ideas will help you make the most of your time at Alorkpem.
Travel by boat will be a regular part of your placement, as you’ll be living and working within an island community.
Accommodation
You’ll live in a two-bedroom house with water and electricity provided. Your accommodation will give you your own space while allowing you to experience everyday life within the local community.
Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
