PIER

You will be assisting with PIER with a variety of their educational programme. PIER is basted in the West End but operates across the beautiful Caribbean island if Roatan. 

Your Project

PIER is primarily located in West End but works with schools across the Island, no matter where you are you will never we far from the tranquil Caribbean Sea. Roatán is a unique place rich with culture and interesting history. Roatán is an ethnically diverse place with a number of unique communities calling the island home. The diverse communities on Roatán give the Island a strong and identifiable culture distinct from mainland Honduras.

The concept of “Partners In Education Roatán” (PIER) was born in 2006 from the desire to improve Roatan’s public education system and provide the island’s young people with more well-paying and diverse job opportunities. Following Consultations with Honduran Ministers of Education, public and private school teachers, parents, and community members PIER was formed as an NGO.

Today PIER are engaged in a wide variety of activities that depending on your skills and experiences you will be able to get involved in. They operate two bookmobiles that provide students with access to educational resources and ‘Story-in-a-Bag’ kits that combine reading, comprehension and activities that vary from math to science. A Youth club based in the West End Community Centre at Half Moon Bay, where they run fun educational sessions. The Sandcastle library, that offers free tutoring, homework help, English classes, Science activities, and access to an extensive English-Spanish book collection. An Ocean Literacy programme that teaches young people about the importance of the Ocean, its conservation and the benefit it brings the island.  

Accommodation

You will live independently with your project partner in a house in the West End close to PIER’s main centre. The house will have access to all the facilities you need to cook for yourself, as well as a western style toilet and shower.

Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
