Seva Basic School, Abor District

You will be based on the village of Seva, an Island on the lagoon, connected by a causeway to the Anayako. The village is fairly isolated from the main towns, and it is about 40 minutes from the larger town of Akatsi.

Your Project

It contains one main shop – as well as a scattering of food sellers in people’s houses/gardens. There are many goats, sheep, and chickens. Seva School is a combined Primary and Junior High School. You will be teaching English as well as other subjects including Maths, ICT, Creative Art and running extra-curricular clubs. There has been a shortage of primary teachers at the school this year and the Volunteers have been responsible for delivering most of the curriculum in the school. This entails using your own interests in their timetable. This means we need you to use your initiative and energy to throw yourselves into all the opportunities in your community. You will be provided with textbooks that you can use to plan and prepare lessons, delivering the whole syllabus.

In the primary school, taking on classes can mean quite a variety of things, depending on your interest and the needs of the students. Basic literacy is a challenge for the younger students, who often have incorporated learning for the first three years of primary school with a combination of English and Ewe spoken in the classroom. Volunteers in recent years have run reading clubs to assist children who are struggling at school.

Extracurricular activities are strongly encouraged at both schools; there are opportunities for football and netball, a reading club as well as helping with homework. This project demands dedication, initiative, and creativity. It will be up to you to fill your timetable full of lessons and activities.

Accommodation

The Volunteers live in a ‘beach-side’ accommodation which is very picturesque. They are in a gated compound with neighbours and have their own ‘flat’ that consists of 2 rooms. They have a shared outdoor toilet and shower space and cook on a gas stove just outside their room.

Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
