St. Francis Community High School
You will be working as a Volunteer at St. Francis Community High School in the Solomon Islands, a welcoming school set in beautiful, peaceful surroundings approximately 57km northwest of Honiara, the country’s capital.
Your Project
The school provides education from Early Years through to Secondary level, with around 280 Primary pupils and 96 Secondary students. As a Volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to support teaching across a range of subjects, including English, Maths, Science and PE, bringing your own skills, creativity and enthusiasm into the classroom.
St. Francis has a strong sense of community, with close relationships between teachers, students and families. Project Trust previously placed two Volunteers here in 2019/20, and the school is excited to welcome new Volunteers back. You’ll become a valued part of school life, working alongside local teachers and building meaningful connections with your students and the wider community.
You’ll live in a comfortable, self-contained house within the school grounds, alongside accommodation for other teachers. The house has running water, a gas stove and solar power, and you’ll be responsible for preparing your own meals. Although the school is in a relatively rural setting, regular transport links provide opportunities to travel into Honiara.
This placement offers a wonderful opportunity to experience everyday life in the Solomon Islands, immerse yourself in the local culture and become part of a close-knit school community. You’ll need to be adaptable, independent and willing to embrace a different pace of life, but in return you’ll gain valuable teaching experience, develop your confidence and build friendships that could last a lifetime.
Accommodation
You’ll live in a house within the school compound, alongside neighbouring properties occupied by other teachers. The house is safe and secure and is equipped with a gas stove, running water and solar power.
You’ll be responsible for buying and preparing your own food. Regular public buses run to Honiara, and you may also be able to travel into the city using the Selwyn College truck, which makes the journey daily.
If you need medical attention, there is a nurse based at Selwyn College, around a 15-minute walk away.
Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
