Marsh Memorial Home
You will be volunteering in Marsh Memorial Home, nestled in the foothills of Table Mountain. It is a stone’s throw from the world famous Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Rondebosch, one of Cape Town’s most prestigious neighbourhoods.
Your Project
Marsh Memorial Home is a community of residential centres offering a programme of developmental focused care to some of the country’s most vulnerable children from all backgrounds. Operating within a Christian ethos the purpose of Marsh Memorial Home is to provide best practice residential care.
All children at Marsh Memorial Home come via the children’s court system, the majority have families. Ultimately the goal is to see all the children happily reunited and rehabilitated with their families. In order to achieve this, Marsh Memorial Homes work in partnership with the Department of Social Development and a number of welfare organisations with a focus on assisting the families in their local communities.
You will be expected to get involved in the day to day running of the home, supporting permanent staff in all aspects of home life. Most of the children attend local schools, but some who are awaiting their registration to be completed need schooling at the home. You will be expected to assist with this as well as supporting homework activities once the other children return from school. Weekend work will be an integral element of your placement with a strong focus on sports, arts, drama and other extra-curricular activities.
Accommodation
Your accommodation is within a purpose-built building set within the grounds of the home. You will have your own bedroom with access to a shared living room, dining room and fully equipped kitchen. You will also be able to eat on site at the main canteen and have access to laundry facilities.
Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
