ALCS Santa Rosa
You will be assisting with the teaching of a variety of subjects in English, in the Vida Abundante School in Santa Rosa. It is located on the outskirts of the vibrant city of Santa Rosa de Copán in Western Honduras.
Your Project
ALCS Santa Rosa is located about 10 km from the center of Santa Rosa de Copán, a bustling city in the department of Copán and the commercial hub of western Honduras. The city is home to a variety of industries, including tobacco blending and cigar making, mining, and sugar refining. However, the region is perhaps best known for Copán Ruinas, the ruins of an ancient Maya city near the Guatemalan border.
Abundant Life Christian School (ALCS) in Santa Rosa was founded in September 2017. The school serves students from Kindergarten 4 through 6th grade. It is a fee-paying institution; however, many Honduran parents make significant efforts to provide their children with a bilingual education, believing it enhances personal development and improves future job opportunities. ALCS Santa Rosa was established in response to the community’s need for accessible, high-quality bilingual education. Students view enrolment at the school as a valuable opportunity to work hard and pursue further education, opening doors to career opportunities both locally and internationally, enabling them to better support their families.
As a Volunteer, you will primarily be involved in assisting with primary-level teaching across a range of subjects, including English (spelling, grammar, reading, and writing), Science, Maths, History, and Art. You may also be asked to tutor some older students at the secondary level. Lessons are guided by textbooks, and all subjects except Spanish and Social Studies, are taught in English. There may be other international volunteers at the school, mostly from the United States, and the staff are experienced in supporting volunteers, ensuring you will receive plenty of guidance throughout your placement.
As Vida Abundante is a Christian organization, you are expected to be respectful of its aims, mission, and Christian values. You may be invited to participate in Bible classes and morning prayers, although it is not necessary to be a practicing Christian.
Accommodation
You will live in your own accommodation close to the school. You may have a private or shared bedroom, along with a bathroom and an open-plan kitchen and living area. You will prepare all your meals using fresh ingredients purchased from local markets.
