ALCS Gualcince

You will be assisting with the teaching of a variety of subjects in English, in the Vida Abundante School in Gualcince. It is located in a rural location in the Lempira District of Honduras. 

Your Project

Gualcince is a local municipality in the Lempira department. The village lies along the main road between San Marcos and San Juan. The journey to Gualcince takes you through some of the most stunning mountain ranges in the world, though parts of the road can become bumpy, with sections turning into dirt tracks during the wet season. The main school campus is beautiful, nestled in serene woodlands.

The Abundant Life Christian School in Gualcince opened its doors in 2024 as an outreach to some of the poorest students in the country. Although it is a fee-paying school, many Honduran parents are committed to providing their children with a bilingual education, believing it will enhance their personal development and open up future job opportunities.

Gualcince is a rural community where many families rely on subsistence farming. For the students who attend the school, this education represents a valuable opportunity, one that could lead to studying abroad and securing employment that allows them to support their families.

Many students travel long distances each day to attend classes. As a result, they are highly motivated and often form strong bonds with teachers, becoming friends both inside and outside the classroom. Gualcince itself is a warm and welcoming community, offering you the chance to experience the real Honduras.

You will be mainly involved in Primary teaching and will teach a range of ages and subjects such as English (spelling, grammar reading and writing), Science, Maths, History, Art and Physical Education. You may also be asked to tutor some of students in small groups or one-to-one. You will follow textbooks and all lessons (apart from Spanish and Social Studies) are taught in English. There maybe be other Western volunteers working at the school (mostly from the US) and the staff are well-tuned to the needs of volunteers, so you will have plenty of support at your project.  

As Vida Abundante is a Christian organisation, you will be required to be sympathetic to the aims and objectives of the organisation and it’s Christian values. You may be asked to take part in Bible classes and morning prayer although you do not need to be a practicing Christian.

Accommodation

You will live in an apartment in the village of Gualcince. You will have an open kitchen and living room, shared bedroom with ensuite bathroom. You will cook all your meals with locally bought food. Volunteers often enjoy their evening meal on the veranda, laying on a hammock overlooking the lush greenery.
