ALCS Gracias
You will assist in teaching a range of age groups, helping students improve their English. The school is part of the bilingual Vida Abundante Schools and is located on the edge of the stunning Celaque National Park.
Your Project
Gracias is a small municipality in Western Honduras. Founded in 1536 it is one of the oldest cities in the country. Gracias is the capital of the Lempira Department with a population of around 16,000. Located at the bottom of the majestic Cerro Las Minas mountain, it is filled with architectural charm.
Abundant Life Christian School (ALCS) in Gracias was founded as an outreach to some of the poorest students in the country. Although the Gracias is a fee-paying school, ALCS offers a scholarship scheme for those who are unable to afford the school fees. Many Honduran parents strive for their children to gain a bilingual education to increase the personal development of the students and improve job opportunities that may be available to them in the future.
You will be mainly involved in primary teaching and will teach a range of classes, with the main focus on improving the students’ English. You may also be asked to tutor some of the older students at a secondary level. You will follow textbooks and a curriculum with all lessons (apart from Spanish and Social Studies) taught in English. There may be other Western volunteers working at the school, mostly from the US, and the staff are well-tuned to the needs of volunteers, so you will have plenty of support at your project.
As Vida Abundante is a Christian organisation, you would be required to be sympathetic to the aims and objectives of the organisation and their Christian values. You may be asked to take part in Bible classes and morning prayer although you do not need to be a practicing Christian.
Accommodation
You will live in a small house or apartment within walking distance of your project and Gracias town centre. You will have an individual bedroom, a shared bathroom, an open kitchen/living room space and WiFi. Volunteers do all of their cooking with an abundance of fresh food available from the local area.
