Sevalaya

You will be working in the for a charitable organisation called Sevalaya, in the southern province of Tamil Nadu about an hour train journey from Chennai.

Your Project

Sevalaya is an Indian NGO dedicated to supporting impoverished rural communities. The Kasuva campus, where this project is based, is the largest of its eight sites across Tamil Nadu. The campus includes a preschool (Montessori), primary and high schools, an old age home, a community college, a medical centre, a cow sanctuary, and separate homes for destitute boys and girls. https://sevalaya.org

The primary and high schools together serve a total of 2,100 students, ranging in age from 4 to 18. The campus is also home to 70 elderly residents in the old age home and 200 children in the boys’ and girls’ homes. Class sizes typically range from 25 to 40 students.

Your main role will be teaching English, but the community is also eager to involve you in teaching crafts, IT, dance, and sports, as well as assisting in the hostel where students stay during term time. You will need to take initiative and be proactive in creating your own timetable.

The project is in a rural location and closest village is a 10 minute walk.

Accommodation

You and your partner will live on site in accommodation provided by the school alongside other teachers and staff. You will have a shared room and bathroom. All your meals will be provided by the school, and will be vegetarian. Project Trust will provide a monthly allowance to cover other essential expenses.
