Dolphin School

Dolphin School of English is a Cambodia NGO based in the community of Kratie on the Mekong River. The school offers local the opportunity to access to highly prized English lessons.

Your Project

A bright and colourful rural English school about 15 minutes from the centre of the local village of Kratie and the Mekong river. Dolphin School of English is set up as Itโ€™s an NGO and offer English lessons at little to no cost to students. English classes for children take place in an afternoon with around 140 students attending. Thereโ€™s also an evening classes available to local adults (Read more at: Dolphin School of English).

Your main role will teaching English to a range of primary school aged students and adults in one of multiple open classrooms, thereโ€™s also a library room with a range of books and activities at your disposal to help keep lessons engaging and fun. Alongside teaching you will also have the opportunity to get involved at the Khmer Association for Development of Countryside (KAFDOC) with your host during the day. KAFDOC’s mission is to improve living conditions through the active participation of target groups in sustainable natural resources management, quality education improvement, income generation activities, health care, good governance processes, disaster risk management, childrenโ€™s rights, gender promotion, community based ecotourism and increased agricultural production. They are looking for assistance with social media and website projects in particular, but there are many opportunities to be proactive and use your own skills, strengths and knowledge.

Between lesson planning and teaching five days a week and the range of community-based initiatives ran by KAFDOC during the day there is plenty for you to explore and get involved with.

Your accommodation is in the wooden house above the school itself. You will have a large shared room complete with the essentials, beds, mosquito nets and fans; access to a shared kitchen; shared bathroom that has a western style toilet, sink and a cold shower; a large L-shaped living room with traditional Khmer wooden furniture. There is also a garden area where you could have the opportunity to grow their own veggies.
