You will be teaching English at a secondary school in Tao-Ngoi district in Sakon Nakhon.
Your Project
Tao-Ngoi (meaning floating turtle) is located in the north-eastern part of Thailand. This region of Thailand is known as Isaan and it has its own unique culture, language and identity within Thailand. Isaan is a poorer region of Thailand and has strong influences from neighbouring Laos, which is just on the other side of the Mekong River. The Isaan language is closer to Laos than Bangkok Thai and there is a multitude of influences from the many different ethnic groups that have populated the land over time. This all makes living here an extremely interesting experience.
Your main responsibility will be teaching at the local secondary school where there are currently over 900 students. The students are aged from 13-18 years old and you will teach a variety of year groups. The focus will be on improving the students’ conversational English. You will need to be creative in your lesson planning and come up with exciting ways to keep the students engaged.
There are lots of extra-curricular activities to get involved in such as English camps, school band, volleyball, football and arts. You will also have the opportunity to set up new clubs for the children at school and in the local area.
Accommodation
Your accommodation consists of a wooden hut with stunning views looking over the puddy fields. You will have your own individual bathroom and outdoor cooking area and your partner will live in the adjoining hut. Volunteers enjoy trying Thai cuisine and will often eat lunch at the school canteen or go out for dinner at local restaurants or night markets. You will also have the amenities to cook for yourself at home and your own bicycle to explore the area.
