La Providencia

Nestled in the central mountain of Honduras, you will be working in a bilingual school supporting orphans and at-risk children.

Your Project

La Providencia is located just 5km from Siguatepeque. This rural town comprised of farms and forests is often referred to as ‘garden town.’ Almost halfway between Honduras’ two largest cities, San Pedro Sula, and Tegucigalpa. The surrounding area is stunning with views across to the nearby mountains from the school.

La Providencia is part of the US-based Christian organisation Providence World Ministries. It is a family-based community of care for orphans and at-risk children in Honduras working in the rural village of Aguas Del Padre. Aguas Del Padre is about 5km from Siguatepeque, the nearest town, and is surrounded by three other villages. The organisation supports a school and an orphanage in the village. La Providencia grows many of its own produce including coffee, corn and bananas and has a farm with chickens and pigs.

The school is bilingual, and students follow an American curriculum. Volunteers have a variety of roles within the school, these include teaching English to a number of age ranges. You may also be required to teach other subjects such as Math’s, Science, ICT and PE. There is also scope for you to teach music, art, drama, and other extracurricular activities depending on your skills and interests. There is the opportunity to get involved in the surrounding community in secondary projects by teaching families basic English, setting up a choir, a sports camp or sports clubs and helping at the orphanage.

As Providence World Ministries is a Christian organisation, you would be required to be sympathetic to the aims and objectives of the organisation and Christian values and may be asked to take part in Bible classes and morning prayer although you do not need to be a practicing Christian.

You will live with a host family in Aguas Del Padre close to the school. The accommodation is very nice, and you will be warmly welcomed into their home. Meals will be provided by your host family, and you will be encouraged to use your Spanish language skills at home and whilst in the community.

Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
