Candelaria

You will be teaching English in the Primary school, Kindergarten and Secondary school of Candelaria, a rural village in a stunning, mountainous location.

Your Project

Candelaria is a small town set high in the mountains of Lempira – a very beautiful location. It is remote and can be difficult to reach as it is 30km northeast of Tomalá along a dirt road, over various hills and valleys. The village town centres on the Municipal building, church and central park and it serves as a hub for the surrounding agricultural area.

You will be teaching English in the Kindergarten, Primary school and Secondary school. You may also have the opportunity to teach adult evening classes. Your main role will be in the Primary school which has about 180 pupils and limited facilities; it caters to the town and the children from the local aldeas (small rural villages). The role will require you to use your imagination and initiative to teach a wide range of ages and abilities. There is huge potential to have a lasting and positive impact on this community; it is down to you to carve your role in Candelaria.

Accommodation

Accommodation is provided by the Parent Committee who tend to rotate the host family for the Volunteers each year. You will be living with a local family in a traditional house, within walking distance of the school. You will share a bedroom and bathroom with your partner and will eat all your meals with the family. Living with a local family will mean that you are truly immersed in the Honduran lifestyle and you will have an excellent opportunity to improve your Spanish.

Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
