ALCS Yamaranguila

You will be assisting with the teaching of a variety of age groups, supporting the students to improve their English. The school is part of the bilingual Vida Abundante Schools and is located next to the small village of Yamaranguila.

Your Project

The Vida Abundante (Abundant Life) Christian School of Yamaranguila is set in a beautiful location. Surrounded by pine forests and mountain views, the area has a cooler climate than many of the other projects. The area is relatively poor and attracts several charities, missionaries, and Western aid organisations. The larger town of La Esperanza is around 15 minutes away where you can find large markets, thrift stores, shops, and restaurants.

The school was built by Vida Abundante and opened in 2015. Vida Abundante is an American Missionary charity that operates in at least six schools across Honduras. The school was founded to provide high-quality education to some of the poorest students in the country. It is a fee-paying bilingual school but over half of the students who attend the school are on a full scholarship and another 30 percent are on partial scholarships.

The school has 12 grades, and each class has around 20-30 students. As a bilingual school, classes are taught in English with the exception of Spanish and Social Sciences. Your main role will be to teach English to a range of ages. You will mainly be assisting but there may be the opportunity to teach independently. You will cover a number of areas including English, Spelling, Phonics and Maths. Your TESOL course on training will come in handy here. Many of the teachers are American volunteers but there are many other Honduran members of staff.

As Vida Abundante is a Christian organisation, you would be required to be sympathetic to the aims and objectives of the organisation and Christian values and may be asked to take part in Bible classes and morning prayer although you do not need to be a practicing Christian.

Accommodation

You will live in a house in Yamaranguila within a short walk of the village square, where you will find a few different pulperias and comedores. You will have an individual bedroom, a shared bathroom, an open kitchen, a garden and WiFi. Volunteers do all of their cooking with an abundance of fresh food available in the local area.
