ALCS Yamaranguila

You will be working in the bilingual Vida Abundante School, next to the small village of Yamaranguila.

Your Project

The Vida Abundante (Abundant Life) Christian School of Yamaranguila is set in a beautiful location. Surrounded by pine forests and mountain views, the area has a cooler climate than many of the other projects. The area is relatively poor and attracts several charities, missionaries, and western aid organisations. The larger town of La Esperanza is around 15 minutes away where you can find large markets, thrift stores, shops, and restaurants.

The project is a new school that Vida Abudante built and opened in 2015. Vida Abundante is an American Missionary charity that operates in at least five schools across Honduras. The school was founded to provide high-quality education to some of the poorest students in the country. It is a fee-paying bilingual school but over half of the students who attend the school are on a full scholarship and another 30 percent are on partial scholarships.

The school has 12 grades, and each class has around 20 students. As a bilingual school, classes are taught in English with the exception of Spanish and Social Sciences. Your main role will be to teach and assist in Nivelacion (an intensive 7month English course for students aged 8-11). The aim of this programme is to support students who want to join the school the following year but need assistance to improve their English. You will cover a number of areas including English, Spelling, Phonics and Maths. Your TESOL course on training will come in handy here. Many of the teachers are American volunteers but there are many other Honduran members of staff.  In addition, previous volunteers have helped out at a Girls’ Home close to the school at weekends and evenings.

As Vida Abundante is a Christian organisation, you would be required to be sympathetic to the aims and objectives of the organisation and Christian values and may be asked to take part in Bible classes and morning prayer although you do not need to be a practicing Christian.

You will live in a spacious 6-bedroom house on the outskirts of Yamaranguila. You will likely share the accommodation with other foreign and local teachers from the school. The house is well equipped with all the amenities you need; kitchen, bathroom, individual bedroom, washing machine and WiFi. Volunteers enjoy cooking for themselves and making lemonade with the lemons from the garden.

Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
