ALCS La Unión

You will be assisting with the teaching of a variety of subjects in English, in the Vida Abundante School in La Unión. It is located in a stunning but rural location in the South Western Lempira District of Honduras. 

Your Project

La Unión is one of the smallest local municipalities in the Lempira department. The town, with a population of about 6,000, is located between the bigger centres of Gracias and Santa Barbara. The journey to La Unión is through some of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world; a journey over very rough, bumpy tracks in the forested interior. The views from the school overlooking the town are captivating. 

Abundant Life Christian School in La Unión was founded in 2004 as an outreach to some of the poorest students in the country. The school is a fee-paying school however many Honduran parents strive for their children to gain a bilingual education in order to increase the personal development of the students and job opportunities that may be available to them in the future. La Unión itself is a poor community and many of the students who attend the school see this as a great opportunity for them to study overseas and support their families. Many students travel long distances to get to school. The students are therefore very enthusiastic and will become your friends both inside and outside of the school. La Unión is a very friendly community and living here you will get to see and experience the real Honduras. 

You will be mainly involved in primary teaching and will teach a range of ages and subjects such as English (spelling, reading, grammar and penmanship), Science, Maths, History and Art. You may also be asked to tutor some of the older students at secondary level. You will follow textbooks and all lessons (apart from Spanish and Social Studies) are taught in English. There will be other Western volunteers working at the school (mostly from the US) and the staff are well-tuned to the needs of volunteers, so you will have plenty of support at your project.  

As Vida Abundante is a Christian organisation, you will be required to be sympathetic to the aims and objectives of the organisation and Christian values and may be asked to take part in Bible classes and morning prayer although you do not need to be a practicing Christian.

Accommodation

You will live in a house in La Union. You will have an open kitchen shared bedroom, and bathroom. You will cook all your meals with locally bought food. Volunteers often enjoy their evening meal on the veranda, laying on a hammock overlooking the lush greenery.
