Senangkhanikhom

You will be teaching English at a primary school in Senangkhanikhom. This is a small town in the Isaan region of Thailand and while it is small in size there is plenty going on and you will soon make friends with everyone in the area.

Your Project

Senangkhanikhom is located in the Amnat Charoen province just over an hour’s drive from Ubon Ratchathani City. This region of Thailand is known as Isaan and it has its own unique culture, language and identity within Thailand. Isaan is a poorer region of Thailand and has strong influences from neighbouring Laos, which is just on the other side of the Mekong River. The Isaan language is closer to Laos than Bangkok Thai and there is a multitude of influences from the many different ethnic groups that have populated the land over time. This all makes living here an extremely interesting experience.

Surrounded by paddy fields it has a rural and relaxed feel. However, there is always something going on, whether it be the annual rocket festival or local football tournaments the close-knit community love to come together for social events.

Your main responsibility will be teaching at the local primary school, there are just over 300 students, and you will be teaching a variety of ages from kindergarten to grade 6. You will need to be creative in your lesson planning and come up with exciting ways to keep the students engaged. The focus will be on improving the student’s conversational English.

There are lots of extra-curricular activities to get involved in such as the school band, volleyball, football and arts, you will also have the opportunity to set up new clubs for the children at school and in the local area.

Accommodation

You will be living independently, your accommodation will be a house a short walk from the school. You will share a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom with your partner. Volunteers enjoy trying Thai cuisine and will often eat lunch at the school canteen or go out for dinner at local restaurants or night markets. They also have the amenities to cook for themselves at home. You will have access to bicycles to be able to explore the area and visit the markets and temples.
