Junten High School, Oji District

You will be teaching at Junten High School located in a northern district of Tokyo called Oji.

Your Project

Junten is a large, private secondary school with about fifty full-time teachers and 1,200 students. Your main role there will be as a team teacher and you will work with students of a range of ages, focusing on improving their spoken English. All your classes at Junten will be given in conjunction with another teacher. You will be part of The English Learning Centre, one of the departments at the school.

In addition to working at the school you will be regularly involved in a range of other activities. These are likely to include teaching conversational English to members of the parents/teachers association, giving evening classes to civil servants in the local town hall, helping out at a kindergarten and learning Japanese sign language at a local deaf club.

This project has run successfully for over twenty years now and gives volunteers a unique insight into many different aspects of Japanese culture. As well as teaching you will have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities, particularly those with a Japanese bias such as calligraphy and martial arts. Your social life will be ‘urban’ and typical free time activities will include meeting up with your friends, going to the cinema, visiting local sights, shopping etc. Building relationships will be an important part of your year and to make the most of the opportunities here you will need to work hard at learning Japanese and get involved as much as you can.

Accommodation

You will stay in an apartment about a 10-minute walk from Junten, which is rented by the school for you. By Japanese standards it is a spacious living area although at first it will probably seem very small. It has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a storage room and a bathroom. You will cater for yourselves, buying food from the nearby shops and will quickly get the hang of chopsticks!

Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
