Malawi Visa & Travel

General

You will travel together as a country group from a London airport, and it is your responsibility to get yourself to the airport in plenty of time for your international flight. We will send you e-tickets for your international flight at least one month before departure. You are likely to be leaving early September. We will arrange for your country group to meet at a designated time and place at the airport on the day of travel. The process will be explained during Training and two of the group will act as our Travel Coordinators, to be the points of contact with Project Trust should there be any issues during travel.

Luggage

It is important to pack as lightly as possible. You need to be able to carry all your luggage by yourself. Everything will need to fit in to a maximum of one checked bag (a large rucksac weighing a maximum of 23kg) and one carry-on cabin bag. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet all airline requirements, and you will be responsible for paying any excess baggage.

Visa and immigration costs

The costs of Volunteers meeting the legal requirements for entry and long-term stay  (visas, permits, etc.) vary considerably between the countries where Project Trust operates. To make this as fair as possible, we ask each Volunteer to make a payment of £150 to Project Trust as a contribution towards these costs. Payment for entry Visas made by Volunteers before departure from the UK will be included in this cost. e.g. A Volunteer paying £50 for a Visa before departure will only be asked to make a payment of £100 to Project Trust, to make up the total of £150.

Visas / Permits

To enter Malawi, UK citizens travelling British passport do not require a visa on arrival and can enter the country for up to 30 days via free. If you are not travelling on a British passport you may need to apply for an e-visa, which can be done through an online portal. Details of the application process will be sent to you separately after your training course – please do not start the application process until you receive these.

On arrival in Malawi immigration will stamp your passport on entry, valid for 30 days. During this time our Malawi Representative will assist you in applying for Visa extensions up to 90 days and Temporary Residency permits (TRP) the end of your stay in Malawi. We are checking the current process and costs for these extensions and will advise Volunteers when this is clear.
