Bahasi Foundation, Blantyre District

You will be supporting children and young people at BAHASI (Bangwe HIV/AIDS Self-Help Initiative) on the outskirts of Blantyre in Southern Malawi.

Your Project

Established in 2004, BAHASI is an NGO that supports vulnerable groups who have been affected by HIV/AIDS. The organisation currently houses around 30 children between the ages of 2-17 providing them with a home and education. They also run additional programmes such as the BAHASI Girls Program and Environmental projects as well as providing Home Based Care for people in the local community.

No two days at BAHASI will be the same. Your timetable may vary and be flexible but there will always be something you can do to help. Your main role will be to support the day-to-day needs of the orphanage. This may include organising school events such as sports days, school plays and concerts. Planning trips and activities for the kids at the home and those supported by BAHASI programmes. As well as helping the children with their homework.

You will need to bring lots of energy to keep the young kids entertained. Volunteers enjoy organising games and small dance parties before bed don’t go amiss. There is also the opportunity to get involved in other programmes such as teaching at the on-site nursery or supporting other schools in the local area.

You will live in an annex to the main building of the orphanage. You and your partner will share a small room. You will also have a bathroom with a shower and toilet as well as a small kitchen.

Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
