Helen Bishop Home
You will be volunteering at Helen Bishop Orthopaedic After Care Home, a residential home for children and young adults with moderate to severe physical and cognitive disabilities.
Your Project
Situated in Kimberley in the northern Cape, Helen Bishop Home offers children and young adults round the clock care as well as support with their physical, emotional and personal development.
You will be working along side a dedicated team of carers who cater to the medical needs of up to sixty children and young adults at Helen Bishop Home across three separate wards. The children and young adults have a range of disabilities from pretty minor to fairly severe and you will be working to support their emotional and personal development. There are a couple of hydrotherapy pools and a wonderful sensory room at the home as well as a horse that the young people can ride. You will be able to use your strength, skills and the resources available to provide enriching activities within the home. This project is not for the faint hearted and requires strong, confident and highly motivated volunteers. The work will be both physically and emotionally challenging but the rewards limitless.
You will help out with the day to day running of the home. Starting early with a breakfast routine and then helping to bathe, dress and prepare the young people for the day, assisting those able to get ready for school. There will be the opportunity to get involved with the physio and hydro therapies, before taking some of the young people for educational activities or for time in the sensory room. The afternoon is downtime for the young people, spending time in the garden or in the swimming pool.
Accommodation
Volunteers live on-site set within a secure compound of Helen Bishop-Home and food is provided from the main canteen. The accommodation is a separate annex to the home and is light, airy and spacious. Although connected to the main residential home it does afford you your own space and the opportunity to have some privacy.
Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
