CEM Ngueniene, Thiès Region

You will be teaching English at a Middle School in the rural village of Ngueniene. It is a small village of around 6,000 people comprised of a large diaspora community.

Your Project

Ngueniene is located 10km inland from the Petite Côte of Senegal and is a 20 minute drive away from the nearest town of Joal-Fadiouth. It has a remarkably rural feel despite its proximity to larger towns. The village has a number of basic traditional shops and locals grow fresh fruit and vegetables.

Unlike the majority of Senegal whose primary language is Wolof, locals in this area speak Serer. The village has a high percentage of Christians as a result of a nearby missionary settlement. However, it is still predominately Muslim.

CEM Ngueniene is a new project. It is a middle school for students from 12-19, students follow the French education model comprising of 4years; 6eme, 5eme, 4eme and 3eme. Class sizes vary from 40-65.

Volunteers’ main role is to teach additional English lessons to each class. Senegalese students only begin learning English in middle school so you will be supporting students to learn basic/intermediate English. As well as teaching their own classes, volunteers also help with writing and marking English tests and manage an English and French library. There is also the opportunity to get involved in extracurricular activities such as Art and Drama.
