LV Prasad

You will be working at the LV Prasad Eye Insititute in Hyderabad.

Your Project

The Kallam Anji Reddy Campus in Hyderabad serves as the Centre of Excellence within the world’s largest eye-care network, which includes more than 275 smaller centers across India.

Volunteers live, work, and eat on the main campus, where all meals are vegetarian and a daily curfew of 8:00 p.m. is observed. Occasionally, Volunteers may also have the opportunity to travel to some of the other campuses.

Volunteers are encouraged to be proactive and to seek out opportunities beyond their primary responsibilities in order to fully immerse themselves in the organization and campus life. The main formal role involves working with groups of trainees, ophthalmic nurses, vision technicians, and patient care staff, who arrive in intakes of about 30 each February and August. These trainees, typically around 18 years old, come from poor rural communities. Volunteers support them by teaching English and helping them develop essential communication skills.

Lessons with trainees usually last two to three hours per day, leaving additional time for volunteers to engage with other aspects of campus life. Past volunteers have also enjoyed interacting with patients, for example by reading stories or offering conversational practice. Volunteers live in the same accommodation block as the trainees, which fosters community, cultural exchange, and strong relationships..
