Lycee Djignabo, Ziguinchor Region

You will be teaching English in a large secondary school in Ziguinchor. Located in the southwest of Senegal, Ziguinchor has a relaxed but friendly feel.

Your Project

Ziguinchor is situated on the Casamance River in southern Senegal. It is a fairly large river port which is reached by an overnight ferry which travels down the coast from the country’s capital Dakar. Ziguinchor itself is an attractive town with wide palm-lined boulevards and colourful colonial buildings.

You will be working in the Lycée Djignabo, a large public secondary school in the town. Around 3,400 students attend the school and it is one of the largest schools in Senegal.

You will be responsible for teaching English lessons in the secondary school and leading various other activities. Class sizes are big with between 40-70 students in each class. Students will be aged between 15-21. You will also be working with the English Club and participate in outings, debates and exchanges with other schools. There is a huge amount going on with a strong interest in making use of your skills at the project. Art and drama skills, as well as anything else you have an interest in, will absolutely be useful too.

Accommodation

You and your partner will live together in a house on the edge of the school grounds. The house has a living room, kitchen and bathroom.  You will eat communally with a host family who will really look after you while you are in Ziguinchor. Meals are an important social activity in Senegal, where the whole family will get together. Dishes are usually based on rice, fish, onions, vegetables and spices.

Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
