Lycee Leopold Senghor, Thiès Region

You will be teaching English in the fishing community of Joal-Fadiouth in Senegal.

Your Project

Joal-Fadiouth is a large town south of Mbour, a major city in the Thiès Region. Joal is a sprawling fishing town situated on the coast, about three hours south of the capital, Dakar. Joal has a relaxed feel and you will find that the people are incredibly open and friendly and there will be plenty to keep you busy with markets, beaches and lots to explore. Joal is not a wealthy town and there is generally very little development in the area but is it full of life and culture.

You will be teaching large classes at two schools; a Middle School (CEM) and a large Secondary School (Lycée). Class sizes are big with around 45-75 students in each. You can get involved in English clubs at both the schools and there are lots of opportunities to run secondary projects in the community. This year the Volunteers have got involved with AGIRE, a local conservation charity as well the Fasjom project. Fasjom is a long running secondary project that provides informal education several evenings a week to young girls who do not attend school. This aspect of the project is hugely rewarding, and you will see a significant impact from the work that you do.

Accommodation

You will be living with your partner in a small bedroom with an adjoining bathroom. The accommodation is on the second floor of a building close to the centre of the town. The building houses a number of other families including the landlord and his family. Although there are basic cooking facilities available, Volunteers tend to eat with their host family or the landlords family.

Your living allowance provided by Project Trust will cover your daily living costs.
