Tharua Nittanyanukul School

You will be teaching English in a secondary school in Tharua, located in the central plains of Thailand. Your project will mainly focus on supporting the students to improve their English but there are lots of opportunities to get involved in extracurricular activities.

Your Project

Tharua is a small town with genuine charm, located in the ancient province of Ayutthaya. It is set amidst paddy fields and has a rural and relaxed air, despite its proximity to Bangkok. Although small, it has an impressive number of spectacular temples and an old, wooden town area that is bustling with activity. In the evenings, the streets are taken over by the night market, which fills the air with the smell of fragrant cooking.

Tharua Nittayanukul School is of medium size by Thai standards. It has nice grounds, with benches and tables dotted around beneath leafy canopies. Most students come from relatively poor farming backgrounds, and others from the families of the growing industries on the outskirts of the town. You will be a full member of the English department, but with specific responsibility for conversational English. Class sizes will number around thirty to forty, and you will teach a variety of ages ranging from 12-16. The staff are very friendly and willing to help, should you need any assistance in lesson preparation. The school organises numerous social events that you will participate in, including sports events, English camps, and scout expeditions.

Teachers at the school will gladly train you in Thai boxing, art or music and you can join in with the aerobics classes that are held on the riverside. Previous volunteers have also worked in a local primary school. You will have generous holidays in which to explore the country.

Accommodation

Your accommodation consists of a two-bedroom house including a kitchen and bathroom. Volunteers enjoy trying Thai cuisine and will often eat lunch at the school canteen or go out for dinner at local restaurants or night market. They also have the amenities to cook for themselves at home.
